Jerram Falkus Construction’s Commitment to Mental Health Awareness
10/09/2024
Today, alongside the global community, we observe World Suicide Prevention Day, an annual event taking place on September 10th. Organised by the International Association for Suicide Prevention and co-sponsored by the World Health Organisation, this day is dedicated to raising awareness that suicide is preventable.
Our Commitment to Change
We are committed to fostering an environment where mental health discussions are normalised, the stigma around such issues is removed, and individuals are encouraged to seek the help they need.
Addressing the Theme: Changing the Narrative About Suicide
The theme for World Suicide Prevention Day 2024, ‘Changing the Narrative on Suicide,’ reflects a crucial and timely message. Suicide is the leading cause of death for men under the age of 35 in the UK, and in 2021 alone, the construction industry saw 507 suicides out of 6,319 nationally. These statistics highlight the prevalence of this issue and highlight the complex interplay of factors contributing to mental health risks in our sector.
Joining Forces for a Cause
Recognising the gravity of these statistics, we align ourselves with leading mental health organisations like Mates in Mind. Our collective aim is to dismantle the barriers to discussing mental health openly and to implement effective support mechanisms on all our sites.
Commitment to Enhanced Mental Health Awareness
We have pledged to significantly enhance mental health awareness and facilities for all our employees. This commitment has seen the rollout of Mental Health First Aid training since 2022, an initiative that is now a foundation of our well-being program, expanded across our organisation and all our sites.
Our efforts are bolstered through collaborations with esteemed organisations such as Mates in Mind, St John Ambulance, and CITB. By promoting and integrating their valuable work into our daily operations, we aim to pioneer a standard of mental wellness that resonates industry-wide.
Advocating for Safe and Supportive Work Environments
The stark reality of mental health challenges within the construction industry, particularly highlighted by the alarming statistics of suicide, calls for a unified approach to alter workplace cultures. It is imperative that we transform our sites into safe spaces where open discussions about mental health are the norm, not the exception.
Today, we honour the resilience of those who have faced mental health challenges and emerged stronger. Their journeys inspire our continuous fight against the stigma surrounding mental health.
Suicide prevention is achievable through collective action and compassion. By spreading awareness and fostering hope, we encourage everyone to engage in this vital conversation. Each dialogue, no matter its scale, contributes to a society that supports and understands its members more fully.
Jerram Falkus are committed to building a supportive community for staff. Join us in changing the narrative on suicide and mental health in the construction industry.
