Strategic Expansion: Jerram Falkus Spearheads Wanstead Leisure Centre Renewal
14/10/2024
Last week, Jerram Falkus had the privilege of hosting partners from the London Borough of Redbridge, John Rowan and Partners, and Wanstead High School at the site of the eagerly anticipated Wanstead Leisure Centre project.
Revitalising Community Health and Well-being
Boosting and supporting a healthy community is a fundamental goal for the Council, and the comprehensive renewal of Wanstead Leisure Centre plays a pivotal role in this vision. This ambitious project promises to enhance local community wellness and educational facilities, underlining our commitment to sustainable community development.
Project Overview and Scope
The project involves the construction of a new, state-of-the-art building that will serve both Wanstead Leisure Centre and Wanstead High School, integrating community and educational spaces seamlessly. The planned structure is a 4,200 sqm, three-storey building distributed over three distinct blocks:
Educational Enhancements in Block B
Block B will house 14 new classrooms equipped with modern educational technologies and associated facilities, including a dining hall and a commercial-grade kitchen to cater to the nutritional needs of students.
Expansion of Leisure Facilities in Block C
The existing leisure centre will be expanded to include a 25m swimming pool, dance studios, a modern reception area, and updated changing rooms, all designed to meet the growing demands of the Wanstead community.
Refurbishment and Integration in Block D
Block D will undergo selective refurbishment to enhance the existing structures while integrating them with the new construction adjacent to the centre, ensuring a cohesive and functional design.
By merging state-of-the-art educational facilities with top-tier recreational amenities, this project is set to become a cornerstone of community development in Wanstead.
A Celebration of Collaboration and Progress
Recently, we were honoured by the presence of Redbridge Council’s new leader, Cllr Kam Rai, Corporate Director Mark Baigent, and Director of Education Colin Stewart, alongside other distinguished representatives from the council, Wanstead High School, and our dedicated project team.
Ensuring Safety and Engagement
Prior to touring the construction site, our site manager Bryan Jones, project manager Mark Duggard, and project leader Mark Glock ensured all participants were properly equipped with personal protective equipment (PPE). A thorough health and safety briefing was provided, ensuring everyone’s well-being as we proceeded to inspect the progress of the construction.
Networking and Nourishment
Following the site visit, guests returned to the site offices where they enjoyed refreshments and a selection of delicious nibbles, featuring particularly delightful samosas. This gathering not only fostered a spirit of collaboration but also allowed us to share and celebrate the project milestones.
Rapid Development and Future Prospects
The project is advancing swiftly, with the steel frame fully erected and the foundational structures of the swimming pool in place. Construction of Block B’s roof is anticipated within the next month, signaling rapid progress toward the upcoming phases.
The ground floor layout, destined to become the new canteen, kitchen, and washrooms, has been successfully laid, with the roofing completion targeted by month’s end.
Once completed, the revamped Wanstead Leisure Centre will stand as a premier example of integrated sports and educational facilities, significantly enhancing the local community’s access to top-tier fitness and recreational services.
