Flashback to 1968: A Year of Change and Resilience

Memory Lane
As we continue to celebrate our 140th anniversary, it feels fitting to take a stroll down memory lane and revisit some of the moments that have defined our legacy. A flip through the company photo album transports us back to the year 1968—a time of seismic shifts, both culturally and environmentally, that left an indelible mark on history.
The year 1968 was a time when cultural and social change was reaching its zenith. London, the heart of this transformation, pulsed with the energy of the Swinging Sixties. The air was filled with the sound of “Hey Jude,” the Beatles’ latest hit, and fashion trends like crushed velvet were all the rage. The city was a melting pot of music, fashion, and revolutionary attitudes that would shape the future.
However, 1968 was also a year when Mother Nature made her presence known in dramatic fashion. July of that year saw the UK experience its most severe dust fall thunderstorms in over two centuries. The skies darkened, and intense rain and hail swept through London, causing widespread disruption. This extreme weather event was a stark reminder of the unpredictability of the world we live in—a reminder that resonates even more strongly today.
Delivering Excellence in an Increasingly Complex World
Against this backdrop of cultural revolution and environmental upheaval, Jerram Falkus was already in its 84th year of operation. Our company had established itself as a leader in the construction industry, known for delivering high-quality buildings in some of the most challenging environments. The world was changing rapidly, but our commitment to excellence remained steadfast.
Take, for example, Waterview House in Tower Hamlets, which we completed in 1968. This project was a testament to our ability to deliver in an increasingly complex world. The view from Waterview House has changed almost beyond recognition over the decades, with the Docklands to the south and the City to the west evolving into the urban landscapes we know today. Yet, while fashions have come and gone, and music has evolved, one thing remains constant—our dedication to building structures that stand the test of time.
Waterview House, E14: A Landmark of Resilience
Waterview House is a symbol of our long-standing commitment to quality and innovation. When we designed and constructed Waterview House, we did so with future generations in mind. We understood that the environment in which we build is constantly evolving and that our work must not only meet the needs of today but also anticipate the challenges of tomorrow.
As climate change continues to bring more frequent and severe weather events, our approach to construction is more relevant than ever. We take a long view when it comes to designing and delivering buildings. This means embracing innovation, drawing on our extensive experience, and maintaining an unwavering dedication to quality. Our mission, set out by our founder, remains clear: to deliver quality buildings for the public sector that are built to last.
A Legacy Built to Last
As we reflect on the year 1968, it is clear that the world has changed in many ways. Yet, some things remain the same—our commitment to delivering buildings that are functional and aesthetically pleasing as well as resilient and enduring. We pride ourselves on our ability to adapt to an ever-changing world while staying true to the principles that have guided us for over a century.
Whether it’s the cultural shifts of the Swinging Sixties or the environmental challenges of today, Jerram Falkus has always risen to the occasion. We build with a sense of responsibility to future generations, ensuring that our work continues to stand strong in the face of whatever the future may bring.
