Heathlands Day Centre – A Collaboration

Jerram Falkus Construction care passionately about the communities in which we live and work. We do more than deliver buildings; we deliver places and legacies.

With deep roots in East London and a long relationship with the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham we were only too happy to work alongside the council and join efforts to enhance a vital piece of community infrastructure.

Last month, Jerram Falkus Construction teamed up with other contractors and local residents to transform the gardens at Heathlands Day Centre in Dagenham.

Heathlands is a community based service offering care for adults with profound and multiple learning disabilities, and Autism. The Centre provides vital support for the service users and their families, helping to maintain relationships. The skills and service provided also enables service users to feel independent when living at home. They currently support 50 individuals with a range of activities and services, enhancing their well-being and quality of life.

Heathlands Centre is fully accessible and has a number of facilities such as:

  • fully equipped multi-sensory room
  • art room
  • music room
  • physio room
  • soft play room
  • accessible kitchen

The purpose of the garden transformation was to create wheelchair-accessible gardens allowing all users of the Centre to enjoy this green space.

This was truly a collaborative project. We worked with L&Q, Hill Group, Careys Ltd, Vistry Group and local residents to deliver a garden which is now accessible to service users.

L&Q and Jerram Falkus made donations of materials such as paint, paving stones, shingle and turf. All working together we used our expertise to deliver two paved seating areas, ensuring wheelchair access to a sensory shed. We also repaired and painted an interactive music bridge and gazebo roof alongside clearing brambles and laying new turf.

This could not have been achieved without help from local residents. Community volunteers laid the garden weed membrane and bark, cleared the gardens and made space for future projects.

Carol Hacket, Manager at Heathlands Day Centre said “We are incredibly grateful for the support from Contractors Hill Group, Careys Ltd, Vistry, Jerram Falkus, and our local community.

The new wheelchair-accessible gardens will provide a wonderful space for our service users to enjoy nature and engage in outdoor activities. This project has truly made a difference in their lives.”

This is now a beautiful and accessible space where service users can relax, socialise, and participate in various activities. We are delighted that Jerram Falkus were asked to be part of the team.
