Cannock Mill Cohousing

A unique Passivhaus Cohousing project in Colchester, Essex for Cannock Mill Cohousing Colchester (CMCC). The works included the construction of 23 new build homes, a mixture of one and two bed flats and 17 houses with up to three bedrooms with garages and useful storage space in the under croft of the six flats.

The development also included the refurbishment of a Grade II listed Mill which has become the common house with space for the group to share meals and leisure activities together, as well as guest accommodation and a cycle store. The buildings are designed to and certified as ‘Passivhaus’ registered on the Passivhaus database. The project was built to achieve exceptionally low running costs, sustainable comfort and health, including to Lifetime Homes standards.

Design features include;

  • environment-friendly paints and stains, self­-coloured render that never needs painting and renewable bamboo flooring.
  • high levels of thermal insulation and the absence of thermal bridging, highly insulated triple glazed windows and doors, a high degree of air tightness (windows still open but only when you want them to, i.e. no draughts).
  • recovery of heat from the ventilation system – referred to as mechanical ventilation and heat recovery (MVHR)
  • Bespoke kitchens and staircases made by Falkus Joinery.
