As a residential construction company we worked on a great medical project. The New Grandview Oakwood Adult Autism Unit provides long term specialist residential accommodation to adults with autistic spectrum disorder, who require 24-hour support. The building features three self-contained apartments, for those who can live more independently, as well as en-suite bedrooms, communal areas, and gardens, all specifically designed for people with autism and mental health needs. Rooms are arranged around an activity room and secure central courtyard, to provide more outside space within the care setting. The BREEAM Excellent building employs timber frame construction, on a insitu concrete sub-structure and floor slab. The central courtyard facades were rendered and the external envelope was oak clad, to blend into its woodland setting. It is a single storey development, for easy access, with double height ceilings, single ply membrane roof and an external steel spiral stair to access first floor level roof plant. Extensive soft landscaping was also undertaken.
Our residential construction company built Oakwood in the heart of the Oakgrove housing development, with shared site access and maintained a stringent interface. Once complete, the developer demolished the old learning disability units, Holly Tree and Grandview, to make way for further housing, the sale of this land having funded Oakwood and other hospital building projects by our client. The name Oakwood was chosen by families and staff to reflect the wooded setting of this New Grandview project. Oakwood was highly commended in the Building Better Healthcare awards for Best Supported Living Development.
