Our construction company completed an exciting education construction project: A new 2000 m2 building for Putney High School, part of the Girls’ Day School Trust. This new building provides the school with 9 new science labs, a drama studio, a new music department, and a forum for developing the practice and performance of the spoken word. Additionally, the project included associated canteen refurbishment and external works.
Replacing the former timber-framed, brick, and glass-clad science block that was built in the early 1970s, the new building increases the amount of teaching space while offering more focused and flexible learning environments for the students. The new building was designed and built to meet the specific needs of the school and provide students with the necessary facilities to thrive.
Constructed mainly using London brick and inspired by classical proportions, the building features copper-clad strips alongside the main windows. The use of copper-clad strips not only adds a sleek and modern look to the building but also serves a practical purpose, as it helps to reduce heat gains and glare in the teaching spaces. The south-facing facade at the heart of the site has a colonnade that provides solar shading to maximise daylight in the teaching spaces. This is an essential aspect of the design, as daylight has a crucial impact on learning and student well-being.
Our team worked closely with the school to ensure that the new building was not only functional and practical but also aesthetically pleasing. The classical design and use of high-quality materials not only serve a practical purpose but also create a sense of harmony and cohesion with the surrounding environment.
