As part of the London Borough of Newham’s expansion programme, Tollgate Primary School needed to expand from two form to three form entry to provide capacity for over 630 children.
We constructed two new two-storey classroom blocks in order to extend the existing school buildings and these new buildings now accommodate two new classrooms, three SEN suites, two offices and new pupil toilets. The project also comprised an infill extension which provides a new kitchen and servery along with some internal remodelling, providing three further classrooms and office space.
A bridge link at first floor level, links the two buildings physically and aesthetically in line with the school’s aim to promote a more inclusive and homogeneous school spirit.
In order to re-provide the play space lost through increasing the building footprint, a first floor play deck has been constructed. A simple palette of materials with grey brick, zinc roofing and bronze coloured louvres have been chosen in order to complement the existing buildings.
