Romford Student’s Insightful Journey Into the Construction Industry With Jerram Falkus
25/07/2022
Getting acquainted with construction early can pave the way for a prosperous professional career. At Jerram Falkus, we’re proud to play a part in inspiring and nurturing the next generation of talent in our sector. One such inspiring journey was that of Harry, a student from Redden Court School in Romford, who recently completed his work experience placement with us.
Introduction to the Vibrant World of Construction
During his week-long immersion in the construction industry, Harry learned about the multi-faceted aspects of construction. He discovered the rhythm and rigour of our daily operations and how every cog in our company contributes to a much larger, more significant project.
Harry’s introduction to construction started at our Roxwell Road site in Barking, where new residential blocks are steadily rising. Our Commercial Manager, Jack Conneely, and our dedicated team welcomed Harry with open arms and provided him with a thorough understanding of our site operations.
Real-world Experience: The Role of a Quantity Surveyor
Harry has always been intrigued by quantity surveying, a crucial cog in the construction machinery. At our site, he was introduced to the principle of this role and given hands-on experience. He measured dimensions, calculated costs, and discovered the practical application of mathematics in the construction industry, which aligned well with his strong academic abilities.
Expanding Horizons: Participation in the Brent Works Job Fair
Adding more depth to Harry’s experience was his participation at the Brent Works Job Fair held at the iconic Wembley Stadium. Alongside our Social Value Manager, Alison Cormack, and Associate Construction Director, Thomas Kelly MCIOB, Harry helped man the Jerram Falkus stand.
The fair was not only a window to the working world for Harry but also a testament to the sheer number of career paths under the construction umbrella. With over 4,000 attendees, the event provided an immersive learning experience, illuminating the recruitment process in the industry.
An Enriching Experience: Harry’s Perspective
Reflecting on his work experience with us, Harry expressed his newfound appreciation for the construction industry. His strong suit at school has always been mathematics, and seeing its application in a real-world setting, particularly as a quantity surveyor, proved intriguing. Harry expressed, “I would definitely consider a career in construction after my week completing work experience with Jerram Falkus.”
His first experience on a construction site was a revelation for Harry. The coordination of various elements involved in constructing a building, from architectural design to the final stages of construction, opened his eyes to the world of construction, both in its complexity and significance.
Our Commitment to Social Value: Sowing Seeds for the Future
At Jerram Falkus, we are staunch believers in providing opportunities for young people to explore the construction world. We know that our industry is only as strong as its workforce, and we recognise the significance of nurturing future talent. Harry’s experience is just one example of the many initiatives we undertake to ensure we contribute to our community’s social value and provide hands-on learning experiences that may ignite a lifelong passion for a career in the industry.
Our social value initiatives extend beyond work experience placements, and we continue to work closely with schools, charities, and local organisations to provide opportunities that inspire and educate the next generation about the vast world of construction.
Harry’s journey has been a mutually rewarding experience for both him and us. As a company with deep roots in London and the South East for over 138 years, we are more than just builders. We aim to construct a future where our industry thrives, propelled by the ambitious and talented individuals we help foster.
