New City College Appointment: Expanding Opportunities in Hornchurch

Jerram Falkus is thrilled to announce our appointment under a Pre-Construction Services Agreement to advance the design of New City Colleges Sixth Form Project in Hornchurch. This project marks a significant step forward in educational infrastructure, providing much-needed space and resources to accommodate a growing student population. Our involvement in this project reflects our commitment to delivering high-quality educational facilities that meet the evolving needs of our communities.

What Is the Project?

The New City College Sixth Form Project is an ambitious development that will involve the phased demolition of an existing single-storey building to make way for a state-of-the-art two-storey teaching block. This new building will serve as an extension to the existing Berners-Lee House on Wingletye Lane, offering modern, spacious classrooms that will enhance the learning environment for students and staff.

Plans for this development have been approved under permitted development rights, streamlining the decision-making process. This approach has saved time and reduced costs and complexity, ensuring the project can move forward without unnecessary delays.

Key Features of the New Teaching Block

The new teaching block is designed to provide eight additional classrooms, significantly increasing the college’s capacity. Once completed, the facility will be able to accommodate up to 200 additional students, addressing the growing demand for post-16 education in the area. This expansion is made possible through the utilisation of the ESFA Post-16 capacity fund, which supports educational institutions in meeting increased enrolment demands.

Commitment to Sustainability

Sustainability is at the heart of the New City College Sixth Form Project. The development is set to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating, a globally recognised standard that sets benchmarks for the sustainability of building projects. This rating reflects our dedication to environmental responsibility and our commitment to reducing the carbon footprint of the construction industry.

The project will incorporate a range of sustainability initiatives, including low-impact design principles, energy-efficient systems, and measures to protect and enhance biodiversity. These efforts will minimise the environmental impact of the new building and create a healthier, more sustainable learning environment for future generations.

Funding and Support

The funding for the New City College Sixth Form Project is a testament to the importance of expanding educational facilities in response to growing demand. In April 2023, the college secured a £4 million government grant to provide additional classrooms to accommodate the rising number of students. This grant will cover a significant portion of the project’s costs, with the remaining funds provided by New City College.

Construction on the new teaching block is scheduled to begin in April 2024, with an anticipated completion date in March 2025. This timeline reflects our commitment to delivering the project efficiently while maintaining the highest standards of quality and safety.
