Jerram Falkus and 15billionebp: Paving the Path to the Construction Industry for Young People

In our 138-year journey as an established family-run construction company, we at Jerram Falkus Construction have consistently prioritised our social responsibilities and community engagement. We understand the vital role that education and exposure play in choosing a career path, and we are committed to fostering young talent and inspiring the next generation of professionals within the construction and real estate industries by introducing them to work experience events, among others.

Our thriving partnership with 15billionebp, a dynamic charity focused on enhancing youth employability and enterprise skills, is a testament to this commitment.

A Partnership for Progress: Bridging Schools and the Construction Industry

Jerram Falkus, as part of our active collaboration with 15billionebp, embarked on a campaign to introduce students to the intricacies of the construction industry. We hosted engaging events at three schools in Newham and one in Waltham Forest and organised a work experience placement for two enthusiastic students. This endeavour saw involvement from teams across our company, from our head office to our diligent site staff.

Throughout our events, we engaged with an impressive 282 young individuals. Our ultimate hope is that we inspired at least a handful of these students to consider the rewarding opportunities that a career in construction can offer.

A Peek Into The Construction World: Learning Through Experience

Our Social Value Manager, Alison Cormack, was the driving force behind each endeavour undertaken as part of our partnership with 15billionebp. One such initiative was a building brick activity delivered to Year 2 children from Drew and Nelson Primary Schools. The activity, organised in collaboration with Jason Panzavechia from Total Build Ltd, offered a hands-on opportunity for children to engage with the basic unit of construction – the brick.

In addition to the building brick activity, we organised an Architect & Eco building event for Year 5 and Year 6 students from Britannia Village Primary. The session aimed to enhance their understanding of eco-friendly building practices and the role of architects in designing sustainable structures. Moreover, we facilitated a park activity focused on environmental knowledge for the students from Handsworth Primary School.

Practical Exposure: Work Experience at Jerram Falkus

A cornerstone of our partnership with 15billionebp was the work experience placement we offered to Denisa and David, two proactive students from Langdon Academy. The students spent time familiarising themselves with various business functions within our office, gaining valuable exposure to the operational side of a construction firm.

In addition to office-based learning, they had the unique opportunity to experience the vibrant atmosphere of active construction sites. Such immersive experiences allow students to appreciate the realities of the construction industry and help them make informed decisions about their future careers.

Commitment to Hosting Work Experience and Career Engagement Opportunities

At Jerram Falkus, we are passionate about creating platforms that provide young people with valuable insights into the construction industry. Offering work experience and career engagement opportunities can enhance the practical knowledge and skills of young people, increase their confidence and independence, and play a pivotal role in guiding their career choices.

As we continue collaborating with 15billionebp, we eagerly look forward to hosting more work experience events. These initiatives form part of our broader Social Value commitments, aiming to nurture the next generation of construction professionals and contribute positively to our community.

A Bright Future: Continual Investment in Young Talent

The construction industry’s future rests in the hands of today’s young learners. As an industry leader, we are committed to providing these future professionals with a robust foundation of knowledge and practical skills that will equip them for a rewarding career in construction and real estate.

We reaffirm our commitment to investing in young talent as we forge ahead. We strive to organise more such interactive and educative events that can instil in young people an appreciation for the intricacies of construction and inspire them to become part of this dynamic industry.
