32 Cremer Street

Our involvement in the development at 32 Cremer Street, positioned a stone’s throw from our Shoreditch offices, was a project we undertook enthusiastically. This mixed-use scheme entailed the careful refurbishment of the former Marquis of Lansdown public house alongside the erection of a new four-storey building. The project was a delicate balance of retaining the listed building’s character while introducing modern residential spaces.

The refurbishment focused on preserving the 1830s and early 1840s Victorian style, with our Falkus Joinery meticulously reconstructing the shop front and sash windows based on historical photographs. The project’s impact extended beyond the building, contributing to the Museum of the Home’s enhancement by providing a museum cafĂ© on a long-term lease, thereby supporting its accessibility to the public. The new contemporary residential block offers stunning city views and bespoke living spaces, underscoring our commitment to delivering projects that enrich communities and support local heritage.

The Foundry

The Foundry’s transformation, in collaboration with Cullinan Studio, redefined a Grade II-listed canal-side wharf building into a dual-purpose space. Half of the building was refurbished into a new low-energy workplace, while the other half was developed into modern residential apartments. This renovation was marked by its sustainability focus, featuring natural cross-ventilation, an air source heat pump for under-floor heating, and photovoltaic panels for energy generation.

Innovative construction techniques were employed to preserve the building’s historical integrity while providing modern amenities. Introducing a new steel frame within the existing structure allowed for a double-height atrium, enhancing the building’s spatial quality. Our refurbishment efforts ensured that the Foundry emerged as a beacon of sustainable development and architectural preservation, offering a vibrant new workspace and residential area that is a testament to our ability to merge history with modernity.

52 Whitmore Road

The project at 52 Whitmore Road was a testament to our capability to utilise modern construction methods to achieve sustainability and efficiency. This six-storey mixed-use development, replacing a former warehouse, includes office spaces, a photographer’s studio, and duplex flats, all constructed using Cross Laminated Timber (CLT). The CLT structure exemplifies modern construction’s potential for sustainability, offering significant cost and time savings, design flexibility, and a visually appealing aesthetic finish.

This project was particularly notable for its innovative use of space, creating a large, column-free area for the studio and employing sweet chestnut cladding for durability and local relevance. The success of 52 Whitmore Road showcases our commitment to sustainable construction practices and our skill in creating multifunctional spaces that meet the needs of the modern urban landscape.
