Park Primary School, Stratford

Our construction firm worked on the school expansion, which was carried out in three phases. The first phase provides four new classrooms and a new main entrance. Phase 2 remodelled existing classrooms into WC accommodation and phase 3 adds a new multi-purpose hall, raised on angled stilts, creating a mini MUGA court underneath and a roof terrace focused around a new art room, along with a reorganisation of external play space. This will increase the school from a 2.5 form entry primary school to a full 3 form entry.

Occupying an extremely compact site overlooking West Ham Park, the scheme concentrates the expansion in two opposite areas of the school site in order to enhance the building and to provide a cohesive layout which works with the existing school. The building’s elevations, using terracotta tiles on an aluminium rainscreen system complement the existing building’s traditional Victorian masonry. The steel structural frame raises the accommodation off the ground to provide a new entrance and an undercroft play space.

Both extensions join the existing building with a light touch with glazed circulation spaces. The project also provides some remodelled areas within the existing school in the way of new toilets and enhanced fire lobbies.
